How to choose the best Sherwin Williams white paint color for kitchen cabinets:

Picking the perfect white paint color for your kitchen cabinets isn’t as simple as it seems. After all, white is white, right? Not even close.

There are hundreds of white paint colors to consider.

As you sample various whites you will be surprised how they naturally take on subtle, nuanced undertones and see that they easily reflect surrounding colors and light. Whether it’s the cool gray-blue of northern light or the reflections from nearby objects like the leaves on tree’s just outside, the room’s adjacent accent walls, or even a bright piece of furniture; these influences can alter the perceived appearance of white paint.

When deciding on the best Sherwin Williams white paint color for your kitchen cabinets, it is important to think about how they will look in relation to everything else in your kitchen. If your kitchen countertop and backsplash lean towards warm tones, opt for a warm white paint to complement them. If you have cooler tones in these areas, consider a cooler or more “true white” shade.

It’s all about finding the right shade that harmonizes with your home’s overall color palette and lighting conditions.

WHITE PAINT COLORS: LRV & EXPOSURE

What is LRV?

LRV, or Light Reflectance Value, is like a brightness meter for paint colors, ranging from 0 to 100. When looking at the LRV for whites, at the darker end of the spectrum, you’ve got those moody whites with lower LRVs, for when you’re aiming for some depth. Then, as you move towards the higher LRVs, you’re stepping into the territory of those bright, airy whites that bounce light around like there’s no tomorrow. These high LRV shades are ideal for smaller spaces or areas craving that fresh, open feel.

LRV-chart

What are Undertones?

Undertones are simply the colors that can appear in certain lighting conditions or when next to other colors. White paint colors have an LRV between 82 and 94, meaning they reflect a significant amount of light. This makes them prone to picking up tinted light from the surroundings.

If there’s an abundance of greenery outside your window, like lush grass and trees, your white cabinets inside might subtly take on a greenish hue. Similarly, if you have anything red (such as an adjacent outdoor deck), your white cabinet color might appear slightly pinkish as the red hue reflects onto them.

Different lighting conditions can subtly alter the appearance of white walls, casting various hues onto them.

FOR EXAMPLE…

Rooms facing different directions have distinct color characteristics:

– South-facing rooms emanate a warm yellow hue all day long.

– North-facing rooms are tinged with a cool gray, accented by a hint of blue.

– East-facing rooms show subdued colors in the morning and slightly gray tones in the afternoon.

– West-facing rooms feature slightly muted colors in the morning and take on hints of yellow, orange, and pink as the afternoon progresses.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS:

Work With What You Have

Use Your Existing Trim Color (if it’s white)

If it’s a shade of white you’re working with on your trim, it’s usually (but not always) best to use that same white on your cabinets to avoid making one or the other look dingy. Off-white colors for cabinets pair best with wood stained trim vs. a white trim that doesn’t match the cabinet paint color. BUT, there ARE exceptions to this rule, just be sure to test it out with SAMPLES.

Create a Cohesive Palette

Consider your flooring, countertops, backsplash and your wall colors to be sure they all play nicely with one another for a cohesive palette. If you have white appliances, it’s important to note that some of these colors may look a bit drab next to them. For stainless or black appliances, these will work with any shade of white.

Room Exposure and Natural Light

It’s always best to test paint colors in the actual space where you plan to use them. Even seasoned professionals like myself bring paint samples into each room and observe them at various times of the day and night before finalizing a decision. So, while these are standout options in this post, keep in mind that it’s crucial to assess your own space and take into account these variables before making a final call.
